Outpatient Observation Services Post Procedures

Observation is ordered only when a patient meets the criteria for observation and the normal recovery period has elapsed (i.e., CMS 4-6 hours). Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Persistent nausea/vomiting;
  • Fluid/electrolyte imbalance;
  • Dysrhythmias;
  • Psychotic behavior
  • Unstable level of consciousness;
  • Excessive/uncontrolled bleeding;

    Note: Observation services are not a substitute for post-procedure recovery and may not be ordered for the convenience of the patient or physician.
